Step-up transformer or a new 110V appliance?

If you already brought a 230V mixer grinder, a step-up transformer can run it. Whether that's worth it depends on its wattage and how often you cook with it.

How we size it

Motors pull two to four times their rated power for a moment when they start. We size a transformer at three times the motor's watts and round up to the next common size. A 750W mixer grinder needs a 3,000W transformer; a 550W one needs 2,000W.

Heating appliances don't have that start-up surge, so 1.25 times their wattage is enough. But a standard US outlet on a 15-amp circuit should carry no more than about 1,440W continuously, so a 2,000W Indian induction cooktop or kettle is a poor fit no matter what transformer you use.

What a transformer can't do

It changes voltage, not frequency. US power stays at 60Hz. That's mostly fine for mixer grinders, which use universal motors, but not for wet grinders, whose induction motors run 20% faster on 60Hz.

Look for a grounded outlet, a circuit breaker or fuse, and a continuous rating, not just a peak one. Or skip the extra box on the counter and compare 110V mixer grinders.
